In over a dozen schools across San Diego, our after school programs and in-school workshops for kids in theatre and other arts provide the perfect opportunity for children to explore self-expression, practice resolving conflicts, taking turns, creating freely, and gaining self confidence.
The genesis of LifePlay began in 2003 as Open Curtain Theatre Company, recruiting local child actors for several productions of the popular childrens book "Mumbo Jumbo" (by Christine D'Amico) across San Diego, and then quickly evolved into an arts education company, eventually operating as LifePlay Productions since 2008.
LifePlay is led by Ashley McGuire ZeMans, who has been working with children in a variety of roles for 25 years, as a nanny, teacher, camp counselor, Girl Scout troop leader, and family consultant. Ashley is also an active director, helping local schools bring their students to the stage in a wide variety of productions. She has extensive experience in conflict resolution through years of staff management and her work with children.
Ashley's strengths are creative thinking, a unique depth of understanding of children, a high zest for life, and approachability. Ashley can easily understand a child's and family's unique challenges and provide clear, concise guidance to alleviate stress in the home and classroom. Her conflict resolution workshops for children are powerful examples of how to create peace in our world.
Ashley has directed such productions as "A Christmas Carol," "The Threepenny Opera," "A Company of Wolves," several self-written pieces, and many, many original productions of student-written works.
Ashley also serves on the Board of Directors for Moxie Theater in San Diego, a professional non-profit theatre that crafts more diverse and honest images of women for our culture using the art of theatre, and presently is co-directing their production of "A Raisin In The Sun."
This rich background in leadership and child engagement shapes Ashley's unique approach to directing, guiding LifePlay students to develop their best selves before developing their best character.
